ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

Since December 2005, practitioners providing support for people with adoption as a significant reason for seeking counselling have required to be registered. Having initially registered as an Independent Adoption Support Agency, I am now registered with Barnardos Adoption Agency to provide adoption placement and support services.

Aspects of my role in relation to adoption support are also met in working with people who are affected by foster care provision. 

As well as working with people (adults and children) who have been adopted, I also provide support to others closely affected by adoption decisions - adoptive parents, birth parents and others. Local authorities are required to offer counselling support to birth families whose lives may be influenced by a decision to adopt a child. In Suffolk, this service is currently managed on an agency basis by Barnardos and they are able to offer small grants for counselling for use with approved practitioners (including myself).
